from Monday's Globe and Mail. Letters to the Editor:

Montreal -- John Ibbitson (U.S. Rules Apply To Us Too -- Nov. 2) states that Canadians are hypocrites for claiming to be outraged at the profiling of Canadian citizens at the U.S. border, based on country of birth. He correctly points out that the U.S. is justified in watching its border very carefully. But there's a small discrepancy. The Sept. 11 hijackers were born in Saudi Arabia (15 of the 19 hijackers), Egypt, United Arab Emirates, and Lebanon. (France can be added to this list if one includes Zacarias Moussaoui, the "20th hijacker.")

Mr. Ibbitson somehow neglected to give us the full list of suspect countries, perhaps to avoid going over his word limit. Allow me to name them: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan and Syria. One looks forward to Mr. Ibbitson's explanation of why none of the countries of birth of the Sept. 11 hijackers are on the list.
